CARLOW Car Club RALLYCROSS AT MONDELLO PARK

(ROUND 4 OF MOTORSPORT IRELAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP):

RD.4 – 5th February 2012

Carlow Car Club hosted Round 4 of the Motorsport Ireland National Rallycross Championship today.  The first Rallycross of 2012 drew a modest entry of just under 60 cars.  It was a typically damp day for Rallycross at Mondello Park, conditions prooving slippery all day long.

George Tracey (Citroen Xsara ERC) and John Kelly (Mitsubishi Evo 7) were the only 4WD entrys of the day.  George took outright victory for the 4th time this season but John’s ever improving Lancer kept George honest all day ensuring the Mullingar man had to at least work for his victory.

The Supermodifieds saw Championship contenders Ian O’Connell (Lotus Exige) & Willie Coyne (Vauxhall Nova) start alongside each other on the front row.  The RWD Lotus got a typically good start and powered its way to victory.  Coyne gave everything the Nova had and was ready to pounce if O’Connell ran into problems.  But, it was to be O’Connells day at the races and he extended his Championship lead.  Dessie Tierney kept up his championship challenge with 3rd overall which lifts him in the overall Championship standings.

Ian O'Connell strengthens his Supermodifed Championship position in the Lotus Exige

The 16v Hot hatch class provided the best final of the day with a 3 way race for victory between pole sitter Eddie Peterson and fellow front row starters Graeme Colfer & Gordon Lynch all in 106 Gti’s.  Colfer & Lynch battled for the first corner with Colfer just talking the lead but Lynch fought back into the hole in the hedge and took the lead.  Petterson made a poor start and jokered in Lap 1.  Lynch led for 4 laps but Colfer and Petterson pushed on behind and when Lynch jokered he droped to 3rd place.  Colfer & Petterson finished side by side but Colfer took a well deserved victory by two ten tenths of a second.

Gordon Lynch initially led Hot Hatch in Derek Tohill's 106

The Stock Hatch 8v final nearly saw a different winner for the first time this season when Feargal Bowes got the drop on Noel O’Brien off the start line.  O’Brien jokered while Bowes led but then Bowes stoped out at Rallycross 3 after an electrical fault.  This allowed O’Brien to remain king of the 205 brigade with 4 wins out of 4.  Second through to fourth place was made up by the Clane mafia which included Ciaran the Buggle Murphy, Mark Halligan & Stephen Morrin.

MD O'Brien continued to put manners on the kids in 8v Stock Hatch

The Junior A Final saw a lights to flag victory from pole position by James Fleming, the young  man beghind the wheel of a Toyota Starlet upset all of his rivals driving Nissan Micras.  But Jake Byrne kept him very honest to the flag ensuring the Championship in this class looks like going down to the wire.  Sophie Byrne joined her brother to finish on the podium in third place.  The next few rounds are crucial for all drivers in terms of Championship points, let’s see who can handle the pressure best!

The Micra dominance driven here by Darryl Smyth was broken by Starlet driver James Fleming

The Rallycars saw a new winner today when Fergus Lynch took Derek Tohill’s ex ERC Honda Civic Type R to victory.  Des Ryan started from pole position alongside Lynch and Jack Deegan in his rapid 205.  But Lynch got the best start and drove a calm & collected race to take his first A Final victory.  The field behind Lynch squabled for positions which promoted Thomas O’Rafferty to second palace in his giant killing Corsa.  Jack Deegan finished third overall after pole sitter Des Ryan encountered problems.

Fergus Lynch drove well in the Honda Civic Type R to take victory in the Rally Car class

The next round of the Irish Championship is in 2 weeks time at Mondello Park on February 19th.

George Tracey again dominated at Mondello Park, winning both the Supercar A final and the Superfinal in the third round of the Irish Rallycross Championship. The Supercar class drew five starters, but as Paul Pascoe (Impreza) and the Toyota Celicas of Andrew and Darragh Morris fell by the wayside during the day, only Tracey and John Kelly (Mitsubishi Lancer) made it to the final stages of the event.

Willie Coyne Won the Modified A final with Pearse Browne second and Dessie Tierney third. Padraig Leeson was running second until a driveshaft failure finished his good run but was awarded driver of the day.  Ian Connell was sixth after a engine mount failure and was placed sixth. John Kelly chased Tracey in the superfinal with Willie Coyne running third and best of the two-wheel drives all the way. Dessie Tierney ran in fourth place until lap three when Pearse Browne took the place. Having progressed from the Supernational B final, Don Shannon made his way to sixth place, the bugs now worked out of his Volvo S40 which has been converted to right-hand drive. Young Mark Francis again had a good run, taking seventh ahead of O’Connell who threw in the towel after three laps at the back of the pack.

One of the best battles came in the Stock Hatch 16v final, where Eddie Peterson’s Peugeot 106 led for most of the way, only to lose out on the final lap to Graeme Colfer and Aaron Dalton.

Peterson left his Joker lap until the end, while the other pair had taken the alternative during the first two laps. When Peterson finally chose to take it, he rejoined behind the others to finish third. Noel O’Brien continued his unbeaten run in the 8v Stock Hatch class, Noel Greene also victorious again in the Rally Car class. The Junior Rallycross category was won by Eamon Horan, the third different winner in as many events.

ERC 2012 Lydden hill Round 1

Tohill was on Fire in a Wet & Wild England!

Derek Tohill (Dublin, Ireland) entered round 1 of the 2012 FIA European Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill, Kent, England The Irishman turned up to the first round with no testing and a hopeful team that the car would be good to both driver & team.

The conditions throughout the entire weekend were extremely wet, windy, muddy and cold. But, this suited the Irish team just fine as it was exactly like a Rallycross weekend at Mondello Park in Ireland! The event began with a small oil fire in practice but the Rallycross Rebels crew quickly repaired the damage and ensured Tohill lost minimum track time in practice.

Tohill didn’t disappoint in the qualifying heats and dominated his 3 qualifying races by taking victory in all heats. The Irishman driving his Ford Fiesta MK.7 posted two fastest times in the heats which guaranteed Tohill pole position for the all important main A Final. The PartsforCars supported driver would line up on the front row alongside 2006 European Champion Roman Castoral from Czech Republic (Opel Astra OPC) and young Norwegian David Nordgard (Ford Focus MK.2).

As the lights flashed green for the A Final Tohill made a slippery get away and then got caught up in first corner contact with Norwegian driver Nordgard. Tohill slipped back through the field as he rejoined the track but then put his head down and climbed back up to a podium position in 3rd place. Tohill and the team were very disappointed not to take victory after a dominant performance all weekend.

Conditions were Challenging all weekend! Photo Courtesy Dave Smeets

Tohill commented afterwards “A 3rd place is not what we had in mind as the weekend progressed but it’s good points and a long season, I thank everyone for helping us make it to the grid for round 1, for me this was the hardest job and sometimes it’s just half the work just to be on the grid for the first round, I look forward to a dry event to see where we stack up against our opposition.”

Times were encouraging all weekend... Photo Courtesy Rallycross World
