Career to Date:
Michael started completing in rallycross in 1994 in an Mk2 1600cc Ford Escort. He competed in rallycross & rallysprint events and a selected number of British rallycross events. Michael clinched his first class championship in 1996 and was the last driver to win the 1600cc class with an Escort.
In 1997, Michael and his Team built a second car, a front wheel drive Ford Fiesta. This car helped him to clinch his second 1600cc class championship in 2000 and he also finished 2nd Overall in the Irish Championship and highest placed two wheel drive car.
In 2001, Michael purchased the ex Jason Stone Ford Escort Cosworth supercar. This car allowed him to take the 2001 Overall Irish championship and become the youngest ever Irish Rallycross Champion. Michael continued to compete with the cosworth until the end of the 2004 season.
For the start of the 2005 season, the Coyne Team purchased the ex Dave Bellerby Vauxhall Nova. Michael contested both the Irish and British rallycross championship. The little Nova helped Michael to the Irish over 2 litre class championship and 3rd in the BRDA modified championship. He also achieved 4th & 5th overall in both the Irish & British championship and highest placed two wheel drive car. The 2006 season also proved very fruitful with number of class & modified wins. He successfully defended his class title and won the first ever running of an Irish modified championship. The icing on the cake was winning the Co Kildare motor club clubman’s championship.
The 2007/08 season also proved to another great season with Michael winning the overall modified championship for the second time with brother Brendan claiming second place. In 2009, Michael became the overall Irish Rallycross Champion, Modified Champion and class 3A champion.
The Coyne Team are looking forward to another great and highly competitive season in 2009/10. Starting his 15th year of competing in rallycross, Michael has claimed 16 championship titles with younger brothers Brendan and Willie claiming between them, another 14 class championship titles making the Coyne Rallycross Team a consistent and highly competitive team since its debut in 1994.
