MONDELLO RALLYCROSS Although Tommy Graham's Fiesta qualified on pole position, it was the Focus of Kevin Procter that dominated the finals of the fourth round of the Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park, leading both the Supercar A race and the Super Final from start to finish. Graham stayed close in the A race but eventually took a distant second in the main race after slowing with overheating problems, but with the visitor not being registered for the Irish series, the local ace took maximum points. The Impreza of Andrew Morris held off David James for third position with Barry McArdle, Michael Coyne and Ian O'Connell the top 3 Modified cars home in fifth, sixth & seventh places respectively. Andy Scott's Peugeot 306 held an early third place but clutch problems left him at the back of the field. Earlier, McArdle had just won the Modified A Final from overall champion Michael Coyne's Nova with the battling pair crossing the line 0.005 second apart! Ian O'Connell was back in his Mini and headed the pursuit in third place ahead of David Donoghue's 205. Multiple Stock Hatch champion Derek Tohill was again the man to beat, his Peugeot 106 starting from pole and leading the A Final all the way. Gordon Lynch's 106 held off the 205 of current title holder Michael Duke until a last lap problem dropped him to the tail of the field. Fergus Lynch then claimed third ahead of B race winner Derek Lenehan, who just held Robert Critchley at bay. 14 year old Simon Quinn romped away from the opposition in the Junior A Final in his Mini, with the second placed Micra of Mark Francis under pressure from Paul Barrett's Mini throughout. Jack Newman's Civic dominated the Rally Car A Final ahead of Thomas O'Rafferty's Corsa, with the Integra of Anthony Masterson taking the B race. |
