The Motorsport Ireland Irish Rallycross Championship has its first home race of the season this weekend at Mondello Park with round 2 of the 2009/10 series. Having kicked off its seven event schedule at Pembrey in September, the championship returns home for the remainder of its dates, starting with this Sunday’s County Kildare Motor Club meeting.

The championship will get off to a flying start with an impressive eighty five car entry, one of the biggest for a domestic championship round for many years. The entry list is headed by an eleven driver Supercar grid which features some new names alongside the better known drivers. Christopher Evans heads the entry list as he returns from his European exploits for his first Mondello appearance for a number of seasons with his Opel Astra. Former Irish champion Evans will not have it all his own way however as he will be up against a strong line up of previous Mondello winners.

The strongest opposition to Evans will all be Ford mounted. Welsh visitor Mike Manning lines up with his Puma, with the Fiesta of Tommy Graham and the Focus of Eddie Kinirons as the other top Ford opposition. Also Ford mounted will be Declan Kelly in another Fiesta Supercar while the remainder of the field will be made up of Japanese machinery with four Subaru Impreza’s, including two for series stalwarts the Morris brothers, and the double-driven Mitsubishi Evo of local drivers Tom Kirwan and David Dempsey completing the field.

Fourteen drivers will battle for modified honours with reigning Irish Rallycross champion Michael Coyne the man to beat. Coyne took the overall title last season but will have his work cut out this time around to retain his crown, due to the increased Supercar opposition. Regardless of the overall standings, Michael will still be the target in the two wheel drive ranks where he has dominated proceedings for a number of years. Michael’s main opposition could come from within his own family with brothers Willie and Brendan likely to be his fiercest rivals. All three will need to watch their mirrors closely however, as the always super quick Ian O’Connell could be right on their tail, on his first outing in a new Lotus Exige this weekend.

The Stockhatch championship, which this season has backing from Rathgar Motor Factors and Platinum Batteries, remains strong with thirty entries and as always this budget class will provide some of the closest racing of the day. The Jondol Junior Rallycross championship for fourteen to sixteen year olds is also going from strength to strength with a sixteen car entry, three up on the previous best. An impressive fifteen Rally Cars complete the entry with the versatile Lloyd Hutchinson and his Mini the one to watch as he challenges the Mitsubishi Evo’s and lightweight Corsa’s and Peugeots.

Admission for Sunday’s event is just €15.00 with a further €5.00 discount available through the Mondello Park web site Special Offers page, while children Under 16 are admitted free.

2009/10 New Modified Class Sponsor

2009 / 2010 Motorsport Ireland Modified Class Rallycross Championship in association with Southside Motor Factors & Platinum Batteries

Southside Motor Factors in association with Platinum Batteries are proud to announce themselves as sponsors of the 2009/2010 Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Modified Class Championship.

Press Release Date: Monday 12th October 2009

The 2009/2010 Irish Rallycross Modified Class Championship will be proudly supported by Southside Motor Factors in association with Platinum Batteries.  The championship got underway in Wales during September but it really starts in earnest when it hits Irish soil at Mondello Park, Co. Kildare on October 18th.   A strong Modified entry is expected in this long established category.

Southside Motor Factors distributes Platinum Batteries in the Republic of Ireland.  They also supply a large range of motor components to the motor industry including braking products, clutch parts, suspension parts, electronic & ignition parts, service items, garage consumables, electrical parts, body parts, engine parts, transmission parts etc.

There will also be a Perpetual Cup for the Modified Championship which will rotate each year to the winner of the Modified Championship (1st placed overall driver from both Classes 3A, 3B & 4).  It will require an exceptional performance throughout the championship to ensure the Coyne name does not appear on the trophy again as Michael Coyne has taken class honours for the past 3 out of 4 years.  Last season, Michael achieved such consistently strong results that he also managed to win the overall Irish championship outright, beating all of the 4WD Supercars.  But his strongest challenger last year came from his younger sibling Willie Coyne.  Willie just had his new more powerful Opel Corsa up to speed and looked very quick in Round 1 at Pembrey, Wales before he barrel rolled the Corsa out of contention after contact with British driver Phil Chicken.  It will be interesting to see if Willie appears when the championship resumes in Ireland this Sunday October 18th.  Willie still has his old 1.6 Vauxhall Nova at his disposal.  Brendan Coyne should also be there to challenge his brothers if he can get his engine running as he would like in his Ford Fiesta.

Expect strong challenges from an array of other drivers including Dessie Tierney in his venerable Opel Tigra, Ian O’Connell could be a dark horse when he drives the ex Dave Bellerbey British Championship winning Lotus, he can beat the best of them when he is on form.  Ian Byrnes Toyota MR2 is very quick off the line so if he can consistently qualify towards the front he will pose a real threat for championship honours.  Other very fast Modified drivers in an array of quick machinery and likely to pose a threat include Chris Grimes, Kieran Curran, Patrick Ryan and Eric Fleming all in pocket rocket Vauxhall Novas.   Seasoned campaigners who also bear a real threat driving some fantastically quick cars include Barry McArdle Renault 5 RWD Turbo, David Curran in the newer RWD beast, the Renault Clio V6, Willie Farrell in his monstrous Golf Turbo, Mark Carroll in his entertaining RWD Starlet Turbo and Lloyd Spendlove in his fantastic looking Lotus.  George Tohill and Pearse Browne should appear later in the season in their revised BMW M3 3.2L Compact.

Other awards will also be presented to drivers in the class at the end of season prize giving.  Prizes will be as follows:

1st Overall Modified Championship – Award + €500 + Perpetual Cup

2nd Overall Modified Championship – Award + €300

3rd Overall Modified Championship – Award + €200

1st in Modified Class 3a – Award + €100

1st in Modified Class 3b - Award + €100

1st in Modified Class 4 - Award + €100

Other Awards:

1. Most Improved Driver in the Modified Championship - €100

2. Best Prepared Car in the Modified Championship - €100

At each event, there will be a product related prize to the Modified class “Driver of the Day”; this will be decided by the commentator at the end of each event.

It should also be noted that either George or Derek Tohill may compete in the Modified / Stock Hatch Cup either occasionally or repeatedly throughout the championship.  If they were fortunate enough to be placed in the top 3 positions in the final standings in either championships, they will forfeit their prize money and pass it to the next best placed driver in the championship; this driver will subsequently pass their prize to the driver below this and so forth…

Stock hatch championship 2009-10

2009 / 2010 Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Stock Hatch Championship in association with Rathgar Motor Factors & Platinum Batteries

Rathgar Motor Factors in association with Platinum Batteries are proud to announce themselves as proud sponsors of the 2009/2010 Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Stock Hatch Championship.

Press Release Date: Wednesday 7th October 2009

The 2009/2010 Irish Rallycross Stock Hatch Championship will be proudly supported by Rathgar Motor Factors in association with Platinum Batteries.  The championship got underway in Wales during September but it really starts in earnest when it hits Irish soil at Mondello Park, Co. Kildare on October 18th.   A very large stock hatch entry is expected in this ever appealing class.

Rathgar Motor Factors distributes Platinum Batteries in the Republic of Ireland.  They also supply a large range of motor components to the motor industry including braking products, clutch parts, suspension parts, electronic & ignition parts, service items, garage consumables, electrical parts, body parts, engine parts, transmission parts etc.  Manager of Rathgar Motor Factors, Gary Murphy commented; “I have visited Rallycross meetings at Mondello Park as a spectator many times.  I always found Stock Hatch to offer close racing with a broad range of drivers involved.  I see many Stock Hatch drivers in our store before races so it’s nice to give something back to the drivers.  The cars are most relevant to our business as they mainly use off the shelf standard items.  We have come up with a number of interesting awards to ensure there is a good spread of prizes between competitors.  We want all drivers to have a good opportunity of winning something”.

There will also be a Perpetual Cup for the Stock Hatch Championship which will rotate each year to the winner of the Stock Hatch Cup (1st placed overall driver from both Class A & B).  Expect a strong challenge for Cup honours from defending and double Stock Hatch Champion; Michael Duke. Last years runner up Noel O’Brien won’t let Duke have it all his own way and 3rd place finisher in the 2009 British Stock Hatch Championship Gordon Lynch is sure to be chasing his first win.  Expect a very strong challenge from relative newcomers to the class Derek Lenehan & Robert Critchley.  Seasoned campaigners can never be underestimated especially in the shape of Declan Nolan, Phillip Kelly, Patricia Denning, Fergus Lynch and Keith Murphy.  All are likely to pose a threat when things go their way.  The class through it’s ease of access will also have some drivers fighting for victory who have not been mentioned above.  Also making a return to the class is 4 times Stock Hatch Champion Derek Tohill.  He is using the Championship as a warm up for his 2010 European Rallycross Championship campaign.

Other awards will also be presented to drivers in the class at the end of season prize giving. This means everybody has a chance to be a winner in this well supported class.  Prizes will be as follows:

Overall Winner Stock Hatch Cup – Award plus €500 & Perpetual Trophy

Runner Up Stock Hatch Cup – Award & €250

Third Place Stock Hatch Cup – Award & €150

Overall Winner Stock Hatch Class A – Award

Runner Up Stock Hatch Class A - Award

Third Place Stock Hatch Class A - Award

Overall Winner Stock Hatch Class B – Award

Runner Up Stock Hatch Class B - Award

Third Place Stock Hatch Class B - Award

Other Awards:

1. Best New Driver in the Class - €100

2. Most Improved Driver in the Class - €100

3. Best Prepared Car in the Class - €100

4. Most Spirited Performance of the year (This can go to an organiser, driver, mechanic, team manager, marshall, family member etc.) - €100

5. Highest Female Driver in the Class - €100

At each event, there will be a product related prize to the class “Driver of the Day”; this will be decided by the commentator at the end of each event.

It should also be noted Derek Tohill may compete in the Stock Hatch Cup either occasionally or repeatedly throughout the championship.  If he was fortunate enough to be placed in the top 3 positions in the final standings of the Stock Hatch Cup, he will forfeit his prize money and pass it to the next best placed driver in the championship; this driver will subsequently pass their prize to the driver below this and so forth…
