Irish/BRDA Rallycross Championship Mondello Park

brda_2009__46_.jpg Michael clinches the 2009 Irish Rallycross Championship

In a dramatic finish to the National Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park, Dubliner Michael Coyne took his second title when his rival and championship favourite Derrick Jobb retired from the Super Final.

Jobb, the 2007 champion, looked to be headed for another title, holding second place in the main race behind British Championship contender Liam Doran. However, Doran's father Pat, a former British champion, hit the Tyrone driver from behind on the fifth of the six laps, pushing him off the track, and when Jobb rejoined, he could see virtually nothing through his mud-covered screen, sliding into the tyre barrier at the next corner.

This left Coyne's Nova, which finished fifth in the race, seven points clear in the points table while Jobb was a disappointed second and Willie Coyne was third in his first season in the Opel Corsa.

The Modified Championship also went to Michael with young brother Willie second and Dessie Tierney third. Both Michael and Willie won Class 3A & 3B championships respectively.

Coyne Rallycross Team would like to thank all our sponors for their loyal support over the years and to all friends and family with them could have not made it possible.

A surprise result in the Super Final of Carlow CC's Rallycross at Mondello Park saw the Impreza of Michael Morris take victory ahead of brother Andrew and Michael Coyne's Nova third, with the Corsas of Kieran Curran and Willie Coyne sandwiching Eddie Kinirons' Focus WRC. The Nova was on pole, with Curran alongside and the Impreza on the outside, but at the green light, traction was vital and the Impreza steamed away into the lead. The former champion stayed in touch and was just 1.4s down at the end to leave him in a strong position to take a second National title.

Earlier, Morris had taken a clear win in the Supercar A Final from Kinirons while Coyne was almost 4s ahead of Curran in the Modified A Final. Derrick Jobb's hopes of repeating his 2007 title suffered a setback when his Escort's engine cried enough in the Supercar A Final, leaving him scoreless.

The Stock Hatch A Final saw a repeat of the finishing order of a week earlier, with Michael Duke, Noel O'Brien and Robert Critchley taking the honours. Circuit racer Alan Dawson took the B Final from Derek Lenehan with Garry Carroll the C race winner in yet another Peugeot 205.

Daniel O'Brien made it six wins out of six starts as he clinched the Jondol Furniture Collection Junior title, but he had his work cut out to stay ahead of the similar Mini of 14 year old Simon Quinn who was 0.24s behind in only his second event.

Derrick Jobb had things all his own way in Sunday's rescheduled Carlow CC's Rallycross at Mondello Park, replacing the event snowed off the previous weekend. His Escort easily won both the Supercar and Super Finals to give him a clear lead in the National Championship heading into Sunday's penultimate round. The Tyrone driver's only problem was a broken driveshaft at the start of heat two, but his other two runs gave him pole for the finals and he was never challenged. The Coyne brothers, Michael and Willie, duelled for second place in the Super Final with former champion Michael's Nova just beating his sibling's newer shaped Corsa. Earlier, Michael had just snatched a last corner win in the Modified A Final from Ian O'Connell's Mini.

A frantic day in Stock Hatch saw the entire class given a serious lecture on driving standards at the lunch break, and Michael Duke headed Noel O'Brien and Robert Critchley home in the A Final. Daniel O'Brien extended his Mini's winning score to five in a row in the Jondol Furniture Collection Junior Final while Jack Deegan's Peugeot 205 took the Rally Car A race.

Due to snow at the circuit and in the surrounding area round 5 of the MI National Rallycross Winter Championship 2008/2009 at Mondello Park Circuit was cancelled.

The weather conditions had made travel to the circuit difficult for competitors and have also cause the Stewards of the Meeting to cancel the event on safety grounds.

The event will be rescheduled for this weekend 15th of Februarynews_mondellopark.jpg.
