Motorsport Ireland today honoured their National Champions of 2009 at a prestigious gala lunch held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin.  The lunch was attended by personalities with a record of distinction in the sport spanning many years.

Among the highlights were:

19 year-old Craig Breen from Slieverue in Co. Kilkenny was announced as the Young Rally Driver of the Year, winning the Billy Coleman Award and a sponsored overseas drive in 2010 to the value of €50,000. As Craig is away in the UK today, attempting to complete an already outstanding season by taking part in the Ford Fiesta ST shoot-out, in competition with drivers from six other nations, his parents Ray and Jacky collected the Award on his behalf.

Patrick McKenna from Swords, Co. Dublin was selected as the Dunlop Young Racing Driver of the Year.  The 22 year-old was presented with the prestigious Walter Sexton Memorial Trophy and support to the value of €50,000, which will be tailored to the driver’s needs.

Recently crowned British Rally champion Keith Cronin from Ballylickey, Co. Cork and Kris Meeke of Dungannon, Co Tyrone, the winner of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, were voted by the Motorsport media as the International Drivers of the Year and joint winners of the Manley Memorial Trophy. This reflects the outstanding year which Irish drivers have had in rally competition throughout the world.

Announcing the awards, John Naylor, outgoing President of Motorsport Ireland, expressed his pride in all that the sport has achieved in the past year. John also thanked the Irish Sports Council and Dunlop for their valued support and encouragement in the development of the sport over recent years, particularly in relation to our two young drivers’ awards schemes.

Clubman National Champions were presented their awards and among the winners were National Rallycross Champion Michael Coyne, National Autocross saloon & special Champions Gerard T Brennan and Chris Culleton, Autotest Champion Eddie Peterson, Hillclimb/sprint Champion Paul O'Connell, and Clubman of the year award winner of the J.C Millard Memorial Trophy Jack Lyons.

Andrew Morris scored a surprise double win in the Supercar A Final and the Super Final, his Impreza leading the main race from start to finish after the favourites all had problems, giving the Wexford driver a clear first win over the Modified Renault 5 of Barry McArdle. Another 2wd car, Dessie Tierney’s Tigra, snatched third place on the finish line from David Dempsey’s Lancer Evo 5.

The winner of the previous round, Tommy Graham’s Fiesta, was on pole for the A race but expired in a cloud of smoke at the first corner, leaving Eddie Kinirons’ Focus to lead from Morris until a broken gear lever left him stuck in third gear and he was beaten by 0.01s! Then, with repairs complete, the luckless Kinirons was just too late to the assembly area for the Super Final and that was that.

Gearbox problems sidelined overall Rallycross champion Michael Coyne’s Nova in the heats, leaving Barry McArdle’s Renault 5 to take pole for the Modified A Final. It certainly wasn’t the Coyne family’s day, as brother Brendan’s Fiesta succumbed to an electrical problem on the grid for the second time in a fortnight, and was pushed off the front row. McArdle was never headed, being chased initially by the Toyota MR2 of B race winner Ian Byrne until it fell by the wayside, leaving Kieran Curran’s Corsa and the Nova of Chris Grimes to complete the leaderboard ahead of the sole surviving Coyne, Willie.

Multiple Stock Hatch champion Derek Tohill’s Peugeot 106 dominated the A Final, grabbing the lead at the start and staying ahead of current title holder Michael Duke’s 205 all the way. The 106s of Gordon Lynch and Derek Lenehan were next up, ahead of B Final winner Noel O’Brien. Junior class graduate Padraig Leeson took the C Final in his 205.

14 year old Simon Quinn led all the way in the Junior A Final in his Mini, with Niall Murray recovering to second place after a first lap problem, ahead of Mark Francis in third place. James Fleming eventually triumphed in the B race following two red flags.

John Kelly’s Lancer Evo 7 made it two wins in succession in the Rally Car A Final, with John Newman a distant second in his Civic.

m.coyne_09.jpgIrish Rallycross Championship Continues With Round 3

The Irish Rallycross Championship continues its 2009/10 campaign this weekend at Mondello Park with round three of the series run by the Carlow Car Club. Sunday’s races are set to continue the recent revival in Irish Rallycross with championship leaders Tommy Graham and Michael Coyne at the head of an entry list which includes eight Supercars and fifteen of the two wheel drive modified division machines.

Reigning champion Michael Coyne will be looking to continue to take the battle to the four wheel drive Supercars in the Superfinal, particularly if the track stays dry, but is up against stronger opposition than last season among the two wheel drive brigade. Round two saw him give best to the brand new Lotus of Ian O’Connell, with the former Mini driver emerging as the new star of the modified division now that he is equipped with more modern machinery. Coyne still leads the series thanks to a strong showing at Pembrey but will need another strong result if he is to retain his championship lead.

In the Supercar class local favourite’s Tommy Graham and Eddie Kinirons with their Ford’s will start as favourites ahead of a field of Japanese machinery. Championship stalwarts the Morris brothers will have two Impreza’s on the grid along with Paul Pascoe who joins them in the Wexford based BMRT set up. The remainder of the grid will be made up of Kildare men, with Mitsubishi Evo pilots Tom Kirwan and David Dempsey joined by another Supercar newcomer Barry Johnson with his Impreza.

The Stockhatch championship has been wide open over the first two races of the season with former champions Derek Tohill and Michael Duke finding the going tough. Tohill won at round one in Pembrey back in September but had to pull off the grid at the start of the round two ‘A Final’. Duke failed to score at round one and could only manage fifth at round two as Gordon Lynch took the victory to add to his third place finish at Pembrey. As usual the Stockhatch drivers will provide the biggest class of the day with over thirty cars expected. The remaining classes, Junior Rallycross and Rallycars, continue to perform well with more than a dozen entries apiece bringing the total number of entries above eighty drivers yet again.

Sunday’s event gets underway with the first round of heats at 10:15. The event takes a break for half an hour following the second runoff heats and then finishes off the day with the third runs commencing at 13:45 and the finals at 15:30.
